The first time I became really aware of these delightful little things as a group was when I saw the wonderful display at the New Orleans Aquarium.
The species found around the New Zealand coast is Hippocampus abdominalis, which grows to about 15 cm, is usually greenish grey, mottled with brown, and prefers seaweed covered rocks in shallow water.
Ghost pipefish, various Solenostromus species, are beautiful and wierd. Have a look at some of the following (but don't take the species identifications too seriously):
The sea dragons – leafy (Phycodurus eques) and weedy (Phyllopteryx taeniolatus) varieties – come from Australia. For more information visit:
